Founded in 1970 by José A. Cárdenas, then superintendent of Edgewood Independent School District in San Antonio, the Mexican American School Boards Association (MASBA) was created to address the underrepresentation of Mexican Americans in Texas school board leadership. At the time, only 4% of school board members were Mexican American, highlighting a need for greater representation and advocacy in public education.
As our work has expanded beyond Texas, we have refined our identity to reflect this broader impact. Today, MASBA stands as School Board Members for Latino Equity, reaffirming our commitment to supporting school board leaders as they advocate for the academic success of Latino communities nationwide.
MASBA continues to provide scholarships, leadership development, and policy advocacy to ensure that school board members have the tools and knowledge needed to create more equitable public school systems.
